Sir, - For some years now I have witnessed the erosion of one of the most historical weirs in Dublin, if not in Ireland, Milltown Weir. Requests and representation to Dublin Corporation have, so far, had no success in having the weir repaired.

Rather than concentrate the mind and energy on millennium gimmicks like the proposed `Spike', could we have historical landmarks reinstated in a manner that will ensure future citizens are reminded of things of the past? I'm sure other readers and organisations could nominate other such works needing repairs and updating.

My organisation has a special interest in Milltown Weir for it is ready to collapse and could, one day, result in flooding at Ballsbridge. Could we have a commitment to its reinstatement as a memorial to the year 2000? Our 800 members would surely prefer that to a meaningless and useless spike in O'Connell Street. - Yours, etc.
