Sir, - The year is 2050. A 70-year-old man takes his granddaughter for a walk along Bertie's Boulevard - formerly known as O'Connell Street. At its junction with Henry Street they gaze skyward at the time-stained edifice affectionately known by Dublin wits as "the Shaft for the Daft."

"Why did they build it, Grandad?" She asks in wonder.

"To show our genius, our newfound confidence in our own ability and to herald the coming of the third millennium!" he answered.

"How did they build it, Grandad?"
