Sir, - What a relief there is someone else who cannot believe that the powers-that-be are seriously going to erect "a spike" in the middle of O'Connell Street (January 26th).
I am reminded of the story of the Emperor's new clothes. "Isn't it grand, isn't it grand!! All the city councillors cry." Does no-one have the courage to stop this madness? Are we going to have to wait for the tourists to arrive, shake their heads and ask: "When did the Irish lose their way?", as they view the spike and the homeless on the same street.
Have any of the city councillors looked at the housing list recently? Give Sister Stanislaus a call and ask her if perhaps the millennium could be commemorated with something that may benefit the Irish people. Have they heard of Tallaght Hospital? Something about under-funding for essential services. Drug rehabilitation? The prisons? I could go on.
Please, is there anyone out there who will listen? Or is the Celtic Tiger deaf as well as blind? - Yours, etc., Tricia Pullen,
Cuala Road, Bray, Co Wicklow.
