Madam, - Last weekend I went searching for the newly erected monument to one of Ireland's greatest international heroes - Mayo man Admiral William Brown (born 1777).
After a search along Sir John Rogerson's Quay Dublin, I eventually found it. Not so much a monument as a garden gnome - tucked away in the courtyard of two office blocks.
Having seen impressive monuments to Admiral Brown in South America, this fiddly trinket is a let down. If we can't afford a decent piece of civil sculptor for a hero like Admiral Brown at least have the good sense to put him where he belongs - on a pedestal! - Yours, etc,
JOHN DEVLIN, Erne Terrace, Dublin 2.
