Madam, - First the Government eviscerated the Freedom of Information Act, making its remaining public interest provisions the preserve of the wealthy alone. Now it is proposing to attack the rights of the media to obtain information in the public interest.
A previous Taoiseach promised that his administration would govern as if behind a pane of glass. This Government seems to be intent on governing from behind a brick wall. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - Seamus Dooley's letter of September 8th is an excellent example of why journalists do not make the law. The Minister is bringing in necessary measures to protect the citizens of this State from leaks by gardaí to journalists.
If the print media obey this new law, it will enhance ethics in their profession. But instead Mr Dooley thinks the Minister is smearing both professions.
This reminds me of the way certain politicians reacted to the suggestion that their profession could be involved in corruption.
I did not believe the politicians then and I wouldn't believe the journalists now. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN KENNY, Sandford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
