Sir, – John O’Mahony (October 5th) writes about “meejums” and suggests that there used to be a three-quarter pint measure (medium) for beer. In the North there wasn’t any three-quarter pint measure. Here a medium was a half pint.
There may be some confusion over the larger glass that was used for the bottle of stout. This was a 12 fluid ounce glass which allowed the half pint bottle (10 fluid ounces) to be poured leaving room for the head. The smaller 10 fluid ounce glass was used for draught stout and as the “head” was regarded as part of the liquid content there was no allowance for it. – Yours, etc,
