Sir, – The “medium” of John O’Mahony (October 5th) brings me back to Pauline Maguire’s Anchor Bar in Cahirciveen in 1963. My father and I were visiting Pauline with some friends, and as we chatted in the back room a customer came to the bar. I was sent out to look after him, and he asked me for a “midgim of stout”. Never having pulled so much as a half-pint before, I asked him what this meant. The instant answer was, “It goes in a pint glass”.
So he got a pint and paid for a medium, and everyone was happy. I was 15 then, and since that day I have never even dreamed of debating with a Kerryman. – Yours, etc,
