Love, marriage and divorce

Sir, – Without wishing to dampen the glow of newly married couples, it is obvious that not all same-sex marriages will succeed.

I look forward to the family court reports in 2016 that feature same-sex couples. Perhaps, then, we will see some political pressure brought to bear to change our preposterous divorce laws where a couple can be legally separated for years longer than they were actually married before they could be legally divorced. In other words, it might be about four years before we could hear of a court in Ireland granting a legal divorce after a separation.

In the meantime, please do not get me wrong. I am deeply in favour of marriage for all. It is a great way of keeping (in Ireland, at least) two other people out of misery. – Yours, etc,
