A chara, - I write in response to Gerald Davis's letter (July 16th) on Dr Louis Stewart, the jazz musician.
Agreeing fully with the felicity of Dr Stewart's recent TCD honour, I wish to highlight Mr Davis's footnote about Dr Stewart's absence from Aosdana. The aforementioned Arts Council body does not, apparently, rate the jazz art - even when practised to the magnificent level maintained by Dr Stewart. I wish, however, to point out that jazz is the greatest creative mystery of our age, and that, alone among contemporary arts, it gives us new insight into the human potential.
Because of Dr Stewart's singular and very distinguished achievements in this mmost important and exacting discipline, he should, forthwith, be honoured by the State arts body. It is his due. - Is mise, Colm O'Sullivan,
