Madam, - As a parent of a three-year-old child with cystic fibrosis it was with particular interest that I read the article entitled "A child's life of endless awful suffering" (HEALTHplus, August 19th).

I noted with sympathy and understanding the description of a child suffering from a debilitating, life-threatening condition. However, as I read on I was taken aback at how freely and openly the author - and the doctors in a leading Children's Hospital - seemed to form the opinion that it would be better if that child's life should end if his parents would only accede to this.

The author says the comment that "someone should put a pillow over that boy's face" went unchallenged by the medical team involved. I ask now: by printing this article in your newspaper are you also leaving this unchallenged?

No one - especially a parent - likes to see a child suffer, but this bizarre article seemed to suggest that the best way forward was to smother a child. Who's playing God now? - Yours, etc,
