Madam, - Your coverage of Ennis's success in the Tidy Towns includes a suggestion that Irish Business Against Litter was remiss in monitoring in a previous inspection on the morning after a weekend in which there would have been 10,000 to 12,000 visitors.

It transpires that there were no special events in Ennis on the days prior to any of the inspections. In fact, Ennis's lowly ranking in the IBAL Litter League was the result of several monitorings made on our behalf by An Taisce on Friday and Monday afternoons.

It is a tenet of IBAL that towns should be clean seven days a week, during working hours. For this reason, there are no set times at which An Taisce conducts its inspections. Each visit to Ennis found large accumulations of litter in several of the sites assessed.

IBAL aspires to having all our towns as clean as our European counterparts and looks forward with confidence to an improved performance by Ennis in the next Little League survey. - Yours, etc,
