Sir, - I travel to and from work in the hours of darkness and it infuriates me that there are so many people who are riding bicycles on our main roads who do not have any lighting on their chosen method of transport.

I, as a motorist, had to learn to drive and pass a driving test. I have to tax my car and insure and maintain its roadworthiness and I must be insured to drive. With these procedures that drivers must have by law, I fail to understand why cyclists cannot even have a front and rear light on their bikes. Some cyclists will have fluorescent strips on their dark clothing but the beam of a car light does not rise up to the level of a seated cyclists. So this method of being "visible" is pointless.

Cyclists often "give out" about drivers. But if we could only see them to start with, wouldn't life on the roads be safer - especially for the cyclist? So, cyclists, cop on, get lights on your bikes and stay alive. - Yours, etc.,
