Sir, - Your Editorial of January 27th states that "Lawlor should resign" on the basis of an Irish Times/MRBI opinion poll. Do you seriously suggest that polls should be the basis on which TDs should or should not represent their constituencies in Dail Eireann?
Where are we going? Mr Lawlor was elected democratically by his constituents and presumably they will, at the next election, have an opportunity to renew their choice. Mr Lawlor has not committed any crime. The European Court might have something to say about a citizen being jailed for failing to produce 20-year-old bank records.
I doubt very much if Justice Flood could produce his bank records back to 1974. Could you? - Yours, etc.,
Seamus Lantry, Fathew Mathew Street, Cork.
