Sir, - Aine McCarthy in her article of September 23rd refers to recent research into the possible "ill effects" of ultrasound scans for mothers and their babies. She quotes Pat Thomas, author of Every Woman's Birthrights, who suggests that some of the side effects of these scans are "babies who are left handed, dyslexic or delayed speakers". Speaking as one of the thousands of ciotogs in Ireland, I was surprised to learn, after all these years, that I am in fact slightly imperfect.
Further on in the article, Liz Cotter, sister in charge of foetal assessment at Holles Street, voicing her opinions on the research, refers to this as nonrighthandedness" possibly not wanting to insult us left handers. Incidentally, is it just a coincidence that the article is entitled "On the Other Hand"? - Yours, etc.,
