A chara, – If some people think that building gambling casinos in rural Ireland is some sort of a solution to some of our economic problems I would suggest they visit Atlantic City, New Jersey, and see the sorry state of that city now.
There, too, the politicians and others thought that building more than 10 casino/hotels was the panacea for all the city’s ills. Now they all know better. – Is mise,

Madam, – Cormac O’Culain (June 17th) is right to point out that the citizens of Tipperary are so silent on this issue.
Well, I live in Co Tipperary, but I didn’t vote for Michael Lowry and I think the casino complex is a preposterous idea. It could never work. Apart from the attendant sleaze and the potential for promoting even more family misery in this country, such a place would be detrimental to tourism, as it is very far from what Ireland is about and what visitors come here for.
I don’t often gamble, but I would wager €1,000 that the proposed complex will not exist in five years’ time – other than perhaps as another crazy ghost development. – Yours, etc,
Madam, – Once again your Letters page is filled by po-faced correspondents who are incensed about the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals who come from, and think outside, the mindset of the Pale. This time they are fulminating against a casino complex to be built in Co Tipperary which will create much needed employment and investment! – Yours, etc,
