Madam, – For three consecutive years until the end of 2008, my employment entailed full days of driving throughout Ireland. In two years I had attained 10 penalty points. After that I stuck to the speed limits precisely and never reached the 12 point disqualifcation level.
Without any doubt, the third year of driving was my most dangerous. Sticking to Ireland’s inconsistent speed limits was no pleasant task. All calibre of vehicles driven by all ages of driver were constantly overtaking me. Often they enthusiastically expressed their infuriation with my sometimes ridiculous speed. And often they were not so pleasantly surprised with the sudden oncoming of a similiar scenario from around a wide bend.
As simplistic as Roger Wormald’s letter (Letters, April 17th) appeared, the counter argument that speed kills is just as simplistic, considering that it is the accident that actually kills, and the overtaking of unprogressive drivers that causes speed. – Yours, etc,
