Madam, – I can not believe that the so-called paper of record could publish an opinion piece written entirely about an English soccer club (“With hope in our hearts”, David Adams, May 5th). I am an avid supporter of both the national team and an English club team but to see a piece written on the subject in a section which is usually reserved for topics concerned with the burning issues of the day leaves me incredulous. Who exactly was this piece written for? Was there a shortage of articles analysing the death of bin Laden, public service pay cuts, private sector bonuses or perhaps the desperate state of our social welfare system?

Leave sports articles to sports section and spare us the glassy- eyed reminiscences of another Liverpool supporter who seems to think the rest of us are interested in the historic importance of LFC and their ever-impending future successes.

Incidentally, I wonder did Mr Adams shed a tear after the events in Heysel Stadium nearly 26 years ago, an event he seems to have forgotten to mention. – Yours, etc,
