Judges and personal injury

Sir, – Eamon Murray asks what is wrong with trusting judicial discretion (Letters, March 9th). The manner in which judges have used their discretion in granting awards to injury cases is the very reason that many of us have lost faith in judges some time ago.

Amazingly high awards, in the tens of thousands of euro, for non-life-threatening injuries such as a broken arm or a facial laceration are examples of how many judges are not of this world. This type of case has been a regular feature in The Irish Times for years now. My only regret is that judges still have any opportunity left to exercise their discretion in personal injury awards. – Yours, etc,

LESLIE LAWLESS,
