Irishtown in 1824

Madam, - Could your readers help to identify a person who signed her/himself "C.C." on a drawing of 1824 showing Irishtown (now in Dublin 4) as viewed from the seaward side, looking across some marshes, sandbanks and trees toward Dublin city. Prints of the drawing were produced in 1824 by "T.R. Holbrooke at the Lithographic Press, 15 Anglesea Street." The prints are a valuable record of the place and period, since the drawing is more-or-less realistic rather than romanticised. Even without C.C.'s identity help about the drawing would be welcome.

Let me describe the picture: it shows St Matthew's church, Irishtown (its nave only half the size of the church today) in the right middle-ground; with church spires and windmills to be seen in the direction of Beggars' Bush and Rathmines in the centre and left back-ground. A woman and child, their backs toward us, wander from the coast toward St Matthew's, around pools and under trees. - Yours etc.,

ANDREW WHITTAKER, 54 Sandymount Avenue, Dublin 4.
