Sir, - Controversy surrounds the logo for the international promotion of Irish tourism. Both design and cost have been criticised.

Arramamra Teo, a semi-state company engaged in harvesting and processing seaweed on the western coast for world-wide markets, recently celebrated fifty years of successful trading. To find a new logo, their chief executive, Seamus McGarvey, set up a competition in the schools of Connemara and Donegal.

The winning entry, incorporating the company name and seaweed, was designed by a girl from Carna. She received a cash prize (far short of hundreds of thousands of pounds) and a Connemara marble plaque inscribed with the logo. A copy of the logo is enclosed. - Yours, etc.,
