Madam, – The Wall Street Journalpublishes an editorial praising Ireland for tackling its "runaway public spending" (reproduced in Opinion, June 2nd) but doesn't mention that the crisis we are dealing with was caused by the greed and recklessness of banks and speculators on Wall Street and elsewhere. Now there's a surprise.

This is part of a concerted campaign by the financial and property sectors, and their allies in the media, to convince us that they had nothing to do with the global recession. If successful, it will help them to quickly get back to “business as usual” while the rest of us pick up the tab. – Yours, etc,
