Ireland’s first supermarket

Sir, – In An Irishman's Diary (July 24th), Hugh Oram stated that Ireland's first supermarket opened in 1959.

The first supermarket was opened in Dublin in 1939. It was called the Big Bear and it was to be found on the lower end of Talbot Street. I believe it was advertised as an American type of food store.

Apart from that, I enjoyed the article, particularly because it reminded me of the Monument Creameries and Findlaters. – Yours, etc,
