Sir, - As you have correctly highlighted, litter is of growing concern. It is a challenging problem and one that all residents of this country must take responsibility for. This is the rationale behind the second annual National Spring Clean, a campaign run by An Taisce with support from Government, local authorities and sponsors. The campaign is scheduled to run for the entire month of April.
Everyone must take personal responsibility for solving the litter problem. National Spring Clean gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together and actively participate in cleaning up their local community. The objective is for people to work as teams to achieve a common goal. By participating in strength we can send a message about how strongly we feel about the issue of litter. Currently there are almost 1,000 clean ups scheduled for April - we are hoping to double this figure.
I would like to call on groups and individuals to participate in, or to organise, a clean up in their area any time during the month of April. For more details, readers should contact their local authority or register with An Taisce (telephone 01-4541802) to receive a free clean-up kit. It's easy to make a difference. - Yours, etc., Patricia Oliver,
Chairwoman, National Spring Clean, An Taisce, Tailors' Hall, Dublin 8.
