Sir, - Like Anne O'Flaherty (April 9th) I am a little tired of listening to Noel Dempsey telling us what a good boy he is in relation to litter legislation. What I and many other citizens want to see are clean streets and to see them now. Is the Minister bringing pressure to bear on councils and is it intended that the invisible litter wardens will prosecute and prosecute and prosecute until our wayward citizens are brought to their senses?

Recently I had the displeasure of walking the main street in Dun Laoghaire which was strewn with litter and in which the litter bins were dirty and unpainted, like the dirty and unpainted lampposts. This all within 500 yards of the Rathdown Town Hall!

I thought the Minister's new laws put an onus on councils to keep their environment clean and tidy? Perhaps Mr Dempsey would take a walk around Dun Laoghaire and see for himself. And congratulations to Malahide which always appears to be clean and tidy. - Yours, etc., Dermot Scully,
