Sir, - I was brought up at a time when the Tridentine Mass was celebrated, when Benediction and the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament were more regular events and when greater reverence was paid to the Real Presence in the tabernacle.

I have no doubts in my mind when I receive the Eucharist that it is the body and blood of Jesus Christ. I also fully respect, however, the position of my fellow Christians from other denominations who do not hold such beliefs but who also celebrate the Eucharist in a very special and meaningful way.

In joining them in their celebration, which I have frequently done in the past, I acknowledge that we are jointly commemorating the events of the Last Supper and that we have more in common with each other than we have still dividing us.

Whilst I appreciate that the bishops have a duty to uphold the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church I believe they also have a strong duty to show respect and understanding for the traditions and beliefs of other Christian denominations. I am heartened, therefore, by the response of Dr Willie Walsh in this matter and hope that his enlightened comments will go some way towards healing the sadness caused following the recent publication. - Yours, etc., Kevin Downey,
