Sir, - On RTE 1 news at 1.00 pm (February 8th), I heard the Rev William Cosgrave of the Diocese of Ferns interviewed. Inter alia, he said that the bishops of the Irish Catholic Church are totally independent of each other and, further, that they are independent of the Cardinal. He went on to explain that the Cardinal has an advisory role.

What puzzles me is how, in view of the above, did Eamon Casey, when he was Bishop of Kerry, leave Kerry and take over the Diocese of Galway? The Rev Cosgrave may not like to have to answer that the Cardinal should. - Yours, etc.,
