Sir, - I used to wonder what life was like before electricity. Now, I'm beginning to get an idea.
Every night I get off the train and, along with others, pick my way in total darkness to the main street. There, with no help from the olde worlde lamps, I wait until I dare to cross. Then I walk on the road the rest of the way, because the dogs use the footpath as a toilet . . . better safe than smelly.
