Sir, - It was very refreshing to read John Waters's balanced, courageous column of March 26th. Bombarded as we have been with propaganda on the need to unquestioningly accept our multicultural influx of immigrants, this piece was a breath of fresh air. It voiced the fact that the indigenous population could have some sincere concerns about the cultural and economic future of our small island.
His query about how many we can safely absorb without damage to either natives or newcomers is only common sense. The reference to those "who argue for the destruction of Irish life" also poses a serious question. How can we welcome the enrichment of strangers unless we are self-confident and proud of being Irish and at least attempting to "cherish all the children of the nation equally"? - Yours, etc.,
