Madam, - I enjoyed reading David Adams' thought-provoking column about the possibility of a united Ireland (September 14th). One consequence of a united Ireland would be a substantial increase in the number of elected Northern politicians. We have 166 TDs to represent a population of about 4 million people, while the UK has about 650 MPs representing about 60 million.

Presumably this ratio of one TD for every 24,000 people would be maintained in a united Ireland, resulting in a much larger cohort of northern TDs travelling south to the Dáil than currently attends the House of Commons. - Yours, etc,
