Madam, – Adrian Mullett (July 2nd) states that the democratically elected governments in certain South American countries are “not governments that respect the rule of law”.

The countries to which he is referring (Venezuela, Honduras, Bolivia etc) have endured decades of right-wing unelected military dictatorships which certainly did not entertain any notion of democracy, had little respect for the rule of law and no thought for “improving the lot of the poor”.

Thankfully democracy has returned to South America and hopefully the temporary return in Honduras of the foreign-backed military coup will be defeated by the people. – Yours, etc,
