Madam, - For those who place no value on a hen's life, there was much amusement in last week's report of a truck carrying 6,500 hens to the slaughterhouse shedding its load.
For those who do esteem a hen's life (beyond its monetary value), the photograph of two hens "making a run for it" across a field was a poignant one.
This could have been an opportunity for the media to highlight the truly awful conditions in which most laying hens are forced to live out their entire lives.
Instead, the punners got punning, the cameras clicked wildly, and everyone (except the unfortunate hens) had a hearty laugh. - Yours, etc,
