Madam, - A report in your edition of January 18th says the Exchequer "is facing a €4 billion bill to provide thousands of additional acute hospital beds for public patients over the next decade or so if the health service continues to operate its existing model of care".

That amounts to about €2 per week, about the price of one pint per fortnight, for each of the population for 10 years. If that is what it costs "to operate its existing model of care" what would it cost to provide a civilised hospital service? - Yours, etc,
