Sir, – One can only smile at the remarks by the Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin as reported in your newspaper in respect of the current disgraceful situation in our public health service (Miriam Lord, Dáil Sketch, "Opposition in rude health over Leo Varadkar's smirk", February 26th). Is the man living in a parallel universe? Does he not recall the years from 1997 to 2011? When his party was in government the headlines were no different. In fact I had first-hand experience as an A&E patient during that time. I was on a trolley for 12 hours before I was seen and discharged, and I was one of the lucky ones.
However, the real issue for Mr Martin and his colleagues on this and every other issue on which they pontificate is credibility.
It’s like receiving advice from the guy that burned your house down on how to rebuild it! – Yours, etc,
JOHN KANE,
Limerick.
