Gratitude and organ donors

Sir, – With the week that’s in it, Organ Donor Awareness Week, and as a transplant recipient myself, I would like to recognise the people that make the organ transplantation process so successful by addressing the phenomenal work of all the surgeons, doctors, nursing staff and co-ordinators in all of our national organ transplant centres. I can only speak from experience of attending the National Liver Transplant Unit in St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, but from the experience I have had from sickness to resounding health over the past year, receiving a new liver in September 2015, I have nothing but admiration and praise for the amazing work they do every day.

I simply cannot express my gratitude and admiration in words for the amazing work all the people involved in the transplant process do. I really owe the success of my surgery, along with my newfound rejuvenation and health, to all of them. I think I can speak for a lot of patients when I say how truly grateful I am for making the whole experience so much less daunting than it sounds.

Of course, none of the above would be possible without organ donors. It is such a courageous and selfless act to become an organ donor, and it is difficult to express how much the remarkable kindness of one stranger has changed my life. – Yours, etc,

LAURA DOLAN,
