Sir, - The letter from Jim Ryan of BioResearch Ireland (August 12th) is a good example of why people do not trust official sources. The tone of the letter is dismissive of people's concerns and of the concerns of those who object to the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Mr Ryan also neglects to mention that BioResearch Ireland has a direct interest in the acceptance of GMOs as a consumer product. To keep the debate informed by the publication of accurate information perhaps contributors should declare their interests.

Competent sources can be found in favour of and against GMOs. Some are not fundamentally opposed to GMOs per se but are steadfastly opposed to environmental releases of them. Perhaps Mr Ryan would like to tell us which, if any, independent (i.e. non industry-related) researchers contributed to the Food Safety Authority's report which he quotes as a competent source? - Yours, etc.,
