A chara, - I welcome the promotion of a gender balanced Teaching Council, as part of the so-called "equality agenda" (The Irish Times, September 16th). I hope the Minister responsible will now take steps to gender-balance the teaching service itself, especially in national schools.

Is it politically correct to inquire why the number of male teachers has dropped so alarmingly? Why has the Minister not taken steps to halt the slide?

I believe that conditions of employment should be such as to ensure a fairly equal presence of female and male teachers in the classroom, in the interests of pupils. - Is mise,
