Sir, - In his recent article (The Irish Times, September 25th) the Minister for Education signals clearly his recognition of the parallel roles for both denominational and multi-denominational schools in our system. However, the choice presented to parents by the existence of multi-denominational schools is severely constrained by the level of financial support afforded such schools by the State.

If a multi-denominational dimension is to be maintained and grown within the primary school system - demand for places clearly shows that the need exists - then the issue of financing these schools needs to be addressed urgently. Currently, parents who choose multi-denominational education for their children must find 50 per cent of accommodation costs in these schools in addition to other school fund-raising.

The Minister must ensure that his colleague in the Department of Finance will provide for a level playing field for all schools in the forthcoming Budget. - Yours, etc., Brian Stephens,
