Funding For Childcare

Sir, - I am a Swedish postgraduate psychology student in University College Dublin, studying childcare. I have noticed some distinct differences between Ireland and continental Europe and here. There is inadequate State provision for childcare. There is no subsidising of creches to speak of. A creche costs approximately £400 per child per month. This is creating a serious gap between rich and poor, both in the quality of life of the adults and the children.

Furthermore, in a recent report Ireland came bottom of the list in the EU for primary education funding. One can see also a lack of playground facilities in urban areas.

It seems that Irish people care more about the unborn child than the living one. - Yours, etc.,
