Freedom and film ban

Madam, – The banning of Meir Zarchi's attention-seeking 1978 film I Spit on Your Graveby the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO) is a shameful violation of basic freedoms (Home News, September 21st). We ought not to be surprised that the State still feels that it can trample on freedom of expression or treat its citizens like five-year-olds, but this case of censorship is a particularly useful reminder of how irrelevant some public bodies have become – they can ban whatever they want but the existence of the Internet makes both the ban and the IFCO ludicrous and outmoded.

Do we really need some State-funded “legion of decency” any more? As with so much about the Government and the State these days, the world has moved on. – Yours, etc,
