FOUR BRONZE HORSES OF ST MARK'S SQUARE, VENICE

Madam, - Donal O'Driscoll (March 8th), wants us to encourage the Italians to return the St Mark's quadriga to Greece.

These bronze horses, probably Hellenistic, were perhaps carried by Constantine from a temple site in Asia Minor to his New Rome, on the site of Istanbul, whence the blind Doge Dandolo acquired them in 1204.

It is unlikely they have seen much of Greece.

I commend this idea of their restoration: they could ride there on warm updraughts expelled by woolly-minded redemptorists. - Yours, etc.,
