Madam, - Anne Haverty, in her review of John Sutherland's How To Read a Novel (Books, September 2nd), writes that the book "begins, predictably enough, with Caxton, who invented printing".

Johannes Gutenberg must be turning in his grave. While William Caxton did introduce printing to England in the 15th century, to say he invented the medium is a plain error.

Gutenberg was the undisputed inventor of moveable type, possibly the greatest innovation in the history of mankind, and the cause probably of major redundancies among monastic scribes. - Yours, etc,
