Sir, - The current shortage of hay and silage has created a situation worsened by the attitude of some who have sought to enrich their bank accounts over and above the ideology of profit and loss.

This attitude can justifiably be called extortion, where prices of up to £40 for a round bale of hay and £25 or more for silage are being asked for and received. This is causing death and suffering by starvation of many animals.

If the desire to make money is so strong as to disregard such suffering, what hope is there for a balanced, just and compassionate society?
