Sir, – Dr Shane Bergin and Arlene O’Neill (December 21st) conclude that more research is needed for us to understand exactly how Santa gets his job done by making so many visits in such a compressed time. Making 899 stops per second does seem remarkable, but it is not unprecedented.

Perhaps the academics could use the proposed research to finally reveal how some TDs manage to attend so many funerals without the constraint of time. Indeed, one hopes the research conclusions might also provide an insight into whether the Doppler effect works on the colour of human noses too. It could explain a lot. – Yours, etc,
