Sir, – There is much talk of a possible euro-zone fiscal union, with valid concerns such a move would not be democratically-legitimised.
That is why it is crucial any such union is managed by the EU executive branch, the Commission, which is fully accountable to the European Parliament.
Europe can not be run solely by the part-timers of the European Council, who leave their day jobs for summits in Brussels every few months. It is time for European Commission President José Manuel Barroso to use his bully pulpit with conviction, and speak for the common interest of all Europeans.
