Madam, - For some time, it has struck me that the garish filling stations operated by major oil companies are so much out of character with surrounding buildings. Local authorities should be far more insistent that the designs blend with the local architecture.
These monstrosities are found in sensitive residential areas, tiny villages and attractive towns all over the country and are, in my view, an eyesore. They might be acceptable on motorways and in industrial zones but something more tasteful must surely be within the capabilities of these very prosperous, multinational companies.
I know that instant brand recognition is the be-all and end-all for these companies but I think many people would congratulate them if they showed more imagination, flair and sympathy for the local surroundings.
I am going to lobby my local Councillors to encourage Wicklow County Council to set a new standard of design for filling stations. - Yours, etc,
ALAN D. BELL, Church Road, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
