Madam, - Six generations of O'Briens have ferried passengers and cargo to the Aran Islands from Rossaveal before fish were fished from that port.

As managing director and owner of Island Ferries Teo, a company born of that tradition, I wish to protest most strongly at the proposed introduction of a per capita levy on passengers travelling to these beautiful islands.

Marketing the islands has had very positive benefits for the city of Galway and the west in general. If this proposal is implemented it won't be the first time that the west of Ireland suffered at the hands of decision makers in the Pale. My company employs 35 full-time staff, rising to 70 at peak season. A large number of our staff are islanders. This proposal will guarantee lay-offs by Island Ferries and will threaten the viability of the company itself.

The proposal is blatantly discriminatory in that it excludes other ports and air travel involved in trade to the Aran Islands. Our company pays very expensive harbour dues yearly for antediluvian facilities in what is deemed to be one of the five major fishery ports in the country.

Bord Fáilte invests hugely in promoting Irish holidays. With this proposal a favourite Irish destination will be outside of the price range of many.

Because of tourism, the Aran Islands have a thriving, young and stable population intent on guarding a very unique heritage and culture. This proposal will reduce tourist revenue and will ultimately lead to the demise of our family's boating tradition. - Yours, etc.,

SALLY O'BRIEN, Managing Director, Island Ferries Teo., Rossaveal Pier, Co Galway.
