Sir, - The "Lone voice in the Desert" article on Fr James Good (The Irish Times, July 25th) was an excellent account of some of the fall-out from Humanae Vitae in 1968. The silencing of Fr Good has been a great loss to the Catholic Church in Ireland, but a great benefit to the Church in Kenya.

As a student in UCC in the early 1960s, I remember Fr Good's extra-mural talks on the natural law and sexual morality when students packed a lecture hall for three consecutive weekly evening lectures. His style was always well-reasoned, passionate yet not angry, enlightened by personal anecdotes and extraordinary honesty. Such qualities would have stood to the Church in the past 30 years.

In the past decade Irish people have discovered that some in religious life have practised lifestyles quite different to what they preached. Loyal opposition and total integrity such as Fr Good's should be applauded - even at this late stage. - Yours, etc., Stephanie Walsh,
