Fair Clash Of The Ash?

Sir, - Denis Kennedy C.S

Sir, - Denis Kennedy C.S.Sp says (September 6th) that the game of hurling needs imaginative and radical changes to the championships in order to spread beyond its current very limited playing areas. He should first start by calling on his own Holy Ghost order to have hurling placed on an equal footing with rugby at Blackrock, St Mary's, St Michael's and Rockwell. Dublin might then have a better chance of competing with the better counties.

While Rockwell was originally a hurling college, in my time if you played on the rugby 1st team you were not allowed to play on the hurling team, which was a poor relation. Many of the Holy Ghost priests were better hurlers than rugby players and could have coached hurling teams.

Many are now in foreign fields but I am sure Michael O'Grady could be persuaded to coach the Blackrock team. It must be getting monotonous winning the rugby every year. - Yours, etc.,
