Sir, - The Irish government must truly believe there is no more unemployment in this country, when it has taken steps to ensure that jobs in the meat industry in the Middle East will be subsidised at the expense of similar jobs here.I refer, of course, to the decision by the Minister for Agriculture to support financially the introduction of a new ferry service for live cattle. This will enable exporters to collect subsidies of approximately £250 per beast and to export meat factory jobs to those countries. To ensure this transfer of jobs, it is rumoured that the Irish Government has been asked to pay not only towards the cost of transporting the beasts, but also for the construction of a meat factory in Egypt, where it is highly unlikely that the workers will be paying taxes back to the Irish government. - Yours, etc., Catriona O'Connor,Killarney,Co Kerry.
