Sir, - We would like to thank the 14,000 people who visited the "Money - a journey through time" exhibition in Dublin Castle which finished last week. The high level of turnout confirmed that it was well worthwhile bringing the exhibition to Ireland in the period immediately following the Dublin summit and the launch of the proposed design for the euro bank notes.

Your correspondent, Brian Maurer (January 14th) rightly points out that there were some gaps and inaccuracies in the exhibition. We apologise that it was not possible to correct these during the period the exhibition was in Dublin, but they will be rectified before the exhibition opens in Toulouse later this month and continues on in other member states for the rest of the year.

We would like to clarify one aspect of Mr Maurer's letter. The proposed euro bank notes do, in fact, increase in size as the value increases. So, for example, a 500 euro note as designed is bigger than a 100 euro note and considerably bigger than a five euro note. The design of the notes has been discussed with the European organisations for the visually impaired, and the notes and coins will be produced in such a way as to enable the visually impaired to differentiate them. - Yours, etc.,

Head of Sector,
